Monroney Label: The same thing as a window sticker, but named after the Senator of Oklahoma, Almer Stillwell “Mike” Monroney, who sponsored the Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958. In 2013, the labels were updated to include:

  • Greenhouse gas ratings

  • Smog emissions ratings

  • A QR Code

  • How much consumers will save or spend on fuel over the next five years compared to the average new vehicle

What are some key details to know?


The name “BMW” means “Bayerische Motoren Werke” in German and “Bavarian Motor Works” when translated in English. BMW is one of the “German Big 3” luxury automakers. BMW vehicles are known for combining technology with luxury and their model and trim names reflect this as well.

What does the window sticker not provide?


A window sticker will not provide information on whether a used car has had aftermarket parts installed from a previous owner and/or the original dealer. The window sticker shows the vehicle as it came from the factory, and does not reflect improvements or repairs. Information about the current vehicle condition or any history of accidents will not be included on the window sticker.

There are a few instances to be aware of when trying to use this VIN decoder or Window sticker that will inhibit you from using it.


Reasons the VIN decoder will not work:

  • The vehicle models older than 2013 typically cannot use a VIN decoder

  • VIN is not 17 digits long (pre 1981 vehicles)

  • VIN contains illegal characters

  • Does not pass the checksum test

    • A test in the U.S. and Canada in the 9th position to determine the VIN’s validity

  • Outside of data provider’s coverage

  • The vehicle is brand new (not in the system yet)
